CITY OF GOLDEN
LINDSTROM DITCH DIVERSION STRUCTURE

The Lindstrom diversion facilities are currently owned by a ranch family and the City of Golden. The facilities are located on the West Fork of Clear Creek, near Empire, Colorado. Originally constructed in the 1920s, the facilities have been used to divert water through the Lindstrom No. 2 Ditch.

The original diversion facilities consisted of a timber-crib, rock-fill check dam which extended about 30 feet across the creek, and a 10-foot long wooden flume at the headgate of the ditch. Over the years, the structures began to show signs of deterioration. During recent years, water could only be diverted into the ditch by hand placement of rocks and boards in the stream, upstream of the diversion dam.
GOLDEN W. W. Wheeler and Associates, Inc. performed a comprehensive assessment of the diversion facilities to determine the feasibility of a major rehabilita-tion. This analysis included analyzing hydrologic conditions to evalu-ate the availability of water for diversions, preparing conceptual designs for alternative conveyance configu-rations, and preparing construc-tion cost esti-mates to assess the economic feasibility of the renovation alternatives. Based on the results of this engineering evaluation, the City elected to pursue a complete replace-ment of the dam and diversion flume.

The new Lindstrom Dam is a timber-crib, rock-fill embankment with a timber sheet piling on the upstream face. A 3-foot high rectangular concrete flume, 50 feet in length, was cast along a sloping canyon wall on the south bank of the creek. Diversion control is provided by a new 36-inch by 24-inch fabricated aluminum slide gate.

Wheeler provided complete project engineering services for the Lindstrom diversion rehabilitation, including: hydrology, hydraulics, design plans, construction specifications, and assis-tance with bidding and related contract negotiations. Wheeler coordinated with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to secure Sec-tion 404 Regional and Nationwide Permits. Wheeler also provided on-site construction supervision and contract management.
